Joseph Sirgy named Virginia Tech Real Estate Professor
M. Joseph Sirgy, professor of marketing in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been named as the Virginia Tech Real Estate Professor by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
Beginning in 1984, in an effort to promote teaching and scholarship in the field of real estate, several donors, led by alumnus John W. Bates Jr., donated to the Pamplin College of Business to establish what is now known as the Real Estate Professorship. The professorship recognizes teaching and research excellence.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1979, Sirgy has a distinguished record of research in the areas of quality-of-life studies and business ethics. He has published more than 200 articles, scholarly books and monographs, and book chapters. He has co-authored nine textbooks.
Over the past 15 years, Sirgy has linked his research program to the area of real estate business, particularly its marketing. He has conducted research on the contribution of real estate to consumer quality of life.
Sirgy has published a textbook on Real Estate Marketing and has taught the core class in Real Estate Marketing for more than a decade.
His scholarship has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Academy of Marketing Science. He was a past recipient of the Virginia Association of Realtors Research Fellow Award.
Sirgy received a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles; a master’s degree from California State University, Long Beach; and a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts.
Virginia Tech’s Program in Real Estate offers a comprehensive interdisciplinary bachelor of science degree in real estate that builds on existing strengths in six of the university's colleges. The program’s experiential courses integrate disciplines such as finance, law, construction, and property management by examining commercial, residential, retail, and mixed-use property from initial project conceptualization through sale or management. Graduates of the program are prepared to enter the real estate industry and make immediate professional contributions.
