Matthew Mayotte appointed director of Student Athlete Academic Support Services
Matthew Mayotte is named director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services at Virginia Tech.
Mayotte will lead the office, which seeks to enhance the educational experience of student-athletes at Virginia Tech. In order to help students balance their academic and athletic demands, the office provides comprehensive academic support services such as tutoring, studying assistance, structured study halls, and academic and individual skill-developing programs.
“We are excited to bring an individual like Matt – who has a depth of experience in a similar office – to our university,” said Karen Eley Sanders, associate vice provost for undergraduate academic affairs and director of student success. “Matt shows a passion for helping student-athletes balance their college experience, so they can be successful in the classroom, in their athletic endeavors, and in their personal lives.”
Each year, Student-Athlete Academic Support Services serves more than 500 student-athletes on 22 athletic programs at Virginia Tech. In addition to students on athletics teams, the office also supports student athletic trainers and spirit squad members.
The office for Student-Athlete Academic Support Services are located in Lane Stadium – a convenient location for student-athletes as most of the other athletic services such as training facilities, locker rooms, and coaches' offices are nearby in the Jamerson Athletic Center, Cassell Coliseum, or the Merryman Center. The provost office and athletics department both contribute to the office.
"Matthew brings a strong skill set to a critical leadership position as director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services," said Whit Babcock, director of Virginia Tech Athletics. "Academics and athletics have good reason to share a collective excitement about the positive strides we will continue to experience under his direction."
Mayotte previously served as director of Student-Athlete Services at Troy University in Alabama for more than nine years, providing leadership for the academic progress of more than 430 student-athletes.
"My commitment to the student-athlete and the responsibility for education has always taken priority in my efforts as an administrator,” Mayotte said. “My precedence continues to be the well-being and personal development of the student-athlete as an individual. The skills I strive to impart provide a model for living well today, and in all future endeavors."
Mayotte received a bachelor’s degree in sport and fitness management and master’s degree in athletic administration from Troy University.
