The Virginia Tech Alumni Association announces a special weekend event designed to help photographers take their photography to the next level, May 30-31 at the Holtzman Alumni Center and The Inn at Virginia Tech.

Year four of this popular program features instructors who will cover sports photography, taking better portraits, an introduction to HDR photography, and more.

Jim Stroup, award-winning senior photographer at Virginia Tech, will also be presenting on his creative process and unique experiences in making some of his favorite photos at Virginia Tech and elsewhere.

The weekend kicks off on Friday afternoon with a boot camp session designed to get participants up to speed for a successful weekend of photography, a campus photography scavenger hunt, and an evening session to help participants identify light, notice patterns, and pay attention to compositional elements. Friday dinner at The Inn at Virginia Tech is also included.

Saturday’s schedule includes breakfast, lunch, and a full day of sessions, beginning with an introduction to HDR photography and a session on how to achieve flattering portraits in any situation. The afternoon offers sessions on sports and action photography, Lightroom workflow, and a closing critique session where participants have the opportunity to have the weekend's presenters evaluate a photo they participants captured during the weekend.

Registration, information on the presenters, and a full program schedule of activities for the event is available online.

The Virginia Tech Alumni Association’s Drillfield Series is a collection of weekend programs and special events designed for alumni, friends, and families. Participants do not need to be Virginia Tech alumni to attend. Special lodging rates are also available at The Inn at Virginia Tech.
