British/Irish pianist Nicholas Ross will perform in the Squires Student Center Recital Salon Monday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. as a part of the Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts 2013-2014 Visiting Artist Series. 

The recital is the eighth in a series of nine guest artist recitals for the season. 

The program will include "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13" by Franz Listz; several works by Claude Debussy, including "Estampes;" and Mozart's "Sonata in C major, K. 545." Also on the program is "Piano Sonata No. 2 (Tzolk'in)" by Virginia Tech faculty member Kent Holliday. Holliday's piece, nicknamed "Tzolk'in," is based on a tonal series inspired by the 260-day calendar used by the Mayan civilization. 

Ross is associate professor of music and director of keyboard studies at Otterbein University.Prior to joining the faculty at Otterbein, he was a faculty member at Sweet Briar College and pianist in the James Piano Quartet, which held residencies at Wintergreen Music Festival and Sweet Briar College. He has performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and Europe in such venues as St. Martin-in-the-Fields and St. John’s Smith Square, London, the Field Room in Dublin, and the Engelse Kerk in Amsterdam. 

Tickets for the recital are $15, with discounted tickets of $10 for seniors and $5 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the Student Centers and Activities Ticket Office on the first floor of Squires Student Center or by calling 540-231-5615. Tickets are also available at the box office beginning one hour prior to the performance at the Squires box office. Discounted seats are available with the purchase of 5 or more tickets to any combination of performances in the School of Performing Arts 2013-14 season.
