Dana Robertson is the new director of the School of Education at Virginia Tech.

Robertson, a professor of reading and literacy at the university since 2021, is a former literacy specialist and coach whose research includes professional learning and coaching and working with teachers and children to advance evidence-based and equitable instructional practices.

Robertson's appointment follows that of Gerard Lawson, who was the school’s interim director since 2023.

"I am honored to step into the role of director of the School of Education and to build on the important work led by Dr. Lawson during his tenure as interim director,” Robertson said. "By working collaboratively with our dedicated faculty, staff, and community partners, I am confident we can continue advancing our mission of preparing educators, counselors and administrators in ways that are imaginative, transformative, and deeply humanizing.”

Robertson has high hopes for the school’s future.

“The School of Education will continue to find innovative ways to ensure that our graduates are not only skilled practitioners but also advocates for integrity and innovation in education,” he said. “I look forward to this next chapter and to the continued growth and impact of the School of Education within our campus and beyond.”

Robertson is president of the International Literacy Association, an organization that aims to connect research and practice to improve the quality of literacy instruction worldwide.

“I am delighted to have Dana join the college’s executive council and am confident that the School of Education will continue to flourish under his leadership,” said Laura Belmonte, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. “He is a nationally renowned scholar, a seasoned administrator, and a thoughtful and caring leader.”

Robertson earned a bachelor's degree in music performance from Berklee College of Music, a master's degree in education from the University of Massachusetts, and a doctorate in education from Boston University.

He is the co-author of two books and frequently presents at national and international conferences.

Among his career honors, Robertson was named an emerging scholar with the Reading Hall of Fame. He also received several awards from the University of Wyoming, where he worked prior to coming to Virginia Tech. Those awards include the Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award, the Marvin Millgate Engaged Faculty Award, and the Mary Garland Early Career Fellowship.
