Are you an amateur photographer? Submit your snapshots to the annual Virginia Tech Education Abroad photo contest and have the chance to be included in the gallery exhibit.

The contest is open to students and faculty/staff who are participating in or have recently participated in a study abroad, service learning, volunteer, research, or internship experience abroad.

“The purpose of the photo contest is to encourage students as well as faculty/staff to share their study abroad experiences with the community,” said Jennifer Quijano Sax, interim director for education abroad. “For many, time spent abroad is filled with profound experiences, and the photo contest gives us a glimpse into their perspectives.”

Finalists and winning photos will be on display at the XYZ Gallery April 15 through April 21 in downtown Blacksburg. A winners’ reception will be held on April 15 at 6 p.m. Winning entries will also be featured on the Virginia Tech Education Abroad website and Facebook page.

Participants can submit photos to six categories:

  • People/Culture: depicts an individual or group of people from a host culture, people in a distinctly international locale, or in cultural or historical dress
  • Places (natural or urban): depicts a landmark or landscape that is clearly identifiable as an international locale
  • Spirit of Ut Prosim: depicts Hokies spreading the spirit of Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) around the world
  • Inventing the Future Abroad: depicts international research/development conducted by Hokies while abroad
  • Hokies Abroad: depicts student experiences abroad (including international students studying at Virginia Tech)
  • Faculty/Staff Abroad: depicts faculty/staff experiences abroad

A panel of judges from various campus departments and offices will judge the submissions on originality, how the photo illustrates the value of study abroad, and how well the artwork relates to the category. The campus community is also invited to vote for their favorite photos on the Education Abroad Facebook page.

All entry forms and photos must be received no later than Monday, April 1 at 5 p.m. Contest guidelines and the entry form may be found on the Virginia Tech Education Abroad website.

The photo contest is sponsored by Virginia Tech Education Abroad, the Division of Outreach and International Affairs, and the Phi Beta Delta International Honors Society.
