With the upcoming 2012 general election, Virginia Tech would like to remind students that, while it cannot provide individualized advice, the university supports a student's right to vote and recommends that students exercise their rights.

Students interested in voting can follow the information listed here to either vote in person at their designated polling place between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Nov. 6 or submit an absentee ballot.

Ballots for the upcoming election will contain candidates for president, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, and other offices depending upon a voter’s location of residence.

Students who wish to vote should make sure their voter registration is up to date before Oct. 15, which is the last day to register or update a Virginia registration. Students may go to the library or post office to obtain a voter registration application or stop by the voter registration office at 755 Roanoke St., Suite 1F, Christiansburg, to fill out a change of address form. Information on polling places, candidates, election results, and materials to bring when voting is available online.

Students who are registered elsewhere in Virginia or outside the commonwealth may vote absentee. Non-Virginians should check with county registrars in their home states for absentee ballot information. Virginia absentee ballot applications are available at the Virginia State Board of Elections website or can be picked up at the voter registrar’s office. If mailed to the registrar, the absentee ballot applications must be received by 5 p.m. Oct. 30. In-person absentee voting is available at the Montgomery County Voter Registration Office until Nov. 3.

Students who register at their campus address may only vote absentee if they meet the criteria for a qualifying event. (Listing "student" as a reason for absentee voting does not qualify for students registered at their Virginia Tech address who will be in Montgomery County on election day.)
