Afroze Mohammed joins Virginia Tech to build strategic business alliances in the National Capital Region
Afroze Mohammed has joined Virginia Tech as associate director of Strategic Alliances in the National Capital Region. This newly created position in Virginia Tech’s Office of Economic Development focuses on building strong partnerships between the university and companies in metropolitan Washington, D.C.
Mohammed, located in the Virginia Tech Research Center — Arlington, will be responsible for fostering collaboration in research endeavors, entrepreneurial activities, and economic development.
“Afroze brings to Virginia Tech a high performance track record in industry, consulting, and research. She has directed successful product marketing and alliance development programs at leading energy, educational technology, and telecommunications software companies,” said John Provo, director of Virginia Tech's Office of Economic Development. “We are pleased to have her on board as we aggressively embrace economic development as another way of extending and solidifying the university's presence in the National Capital Region.”
Most recently, as director of Channels and Alliances at the CURRENT Group LLC, an innovative smart grid company, Mohammed developed a partnership program with complementary technology providers, including both Fortune 500 companies and start-up ventures. Earlier, as director of product marketing at Blackboard Inc., she led marketing initiatives for the company’s flagship e-learning products and managed partnerships with industry associations to increase Blackboard’s market penetration and reputation. At Lucent Technologies, Mohammed ran product marketing and alliance programs for business intelligence software products.
Mohammed’s experience in consulting and academic research includes serving as a principal at Inventive Pathways, a management consultancy specializing in marketing and strategy. Earlier in her career, she was a research associate at Harvard Business School, collaborating with faculty to conduct research on leading business issues.
Mohammed earned an M.B.A. from the Yale School of Management and a bachelor's degree in economics, summa cum laude, from Georgetown University.
A resident of Washington, D.C., Mohammed is active in leadership of non-profits focusing on international development and advocacy for individuals with disabilities.
