The annual American Indian Heritage celebration at Virginia Tech will take place Oct. 15 through Nov. 15. The theme for this year is “Telling Our Story.”

American Indian Heritage Month is dedicated to recognizing the intertribal cultures, the events and life ways, and the designs and achievements of American Indians and Alaska Natives.

The month-long celebration will include films, a discussion series, speakers, and art displays sponsored by student organizations and departments throughout the university. Visit the Multicultural Programs and Services website for a complete listing of events and additional details.

This year’s featured event is a presentation by Gregory Porter at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Squires Student Center’s Colonial Hall, and is part of the Finding My Path Speaker Series. A Virginia Tech alumnus, Porter will share stories about his experience working with Native Americans in New Mexico, as well as discuss events in Virginia Indian history that are traditionally excluded from textbooks and official accounts. The presentation will be followed by a reception in the Black Cultural Center and is free and open to the public.

Free parking is available in the Squires Lot, located at the corner of College Avenue and Otey Street or the Architecture Annex Lot also on Otey Street. Find more parking information online or call 540-231-3200.
