Hokie Camp encourages engagement, smoothes transition to Virginia Tech for new students
This August, Virginia Tech will offer new students a preview of college life at Hokie Camp, an orientation experience for incoming freshmen and transfer students.
Hokie Camp introduces students to the less tangible aspects of life at Virginia Tech, such as traditions and community culture, and provides an opportunity for new students to make connections before they arrive on campus for fall semester.
It is designed as a supplement to new student orientation sessions held on campus in June and July, where incoming students register for classes, pick up student IDs, and learn about university procedures and services. Hokie Camp extends this experience by presenting the university from a student life perspective, building relationships between new students, veteran student counselors, and university resources.
Now in its fourth year, Hokie Camp has proven extremely popular among students who attend. It helps participants get acclimated before school begins, and encourages them to form friendships through group competitions, low-ropes challenges, and other activities.
The camp is held at the W. E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake. The program lasts three days and two nights, held in three separate sessions Aug. 8-10, 11-13, and 15-17. The fee of $195 covers lodging, food, and round trip bus travel between Virginia Tech and Smith Mountain Lake. Incoming students can register for one of these sessions online through Virginia Tech’s HokieSPA. Space is limited, so interested students are encouraged to sign up early.
Hokie Camp is an initiative designed to encourage engagement and assist new students in the transition to college. It is coordinated by the office of New Student Programs, a part of the Division of Student Affairs.
