Virginia Tech has named Matthew Ning, of Great Falls, Va., as the Outstanding Graduating Senior in the College of Science for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Ning, a biochemistry major and psychology minor, is expected to receive a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry in the College of Science in May 2011. Ning committed his time at Virginia Tech pursuing leadership, volunteer, and academic excellence.  

In order to receive the Outstanding Graduating Senior honor a student must exemplify not only leadership qualities, but volunteer service, outstanding academic successs, and extracurricular participation; Ning represents all these. Ning has volunteered for Crisis Hotline, Inova Fairfax Hospital, LakeView Rehab Center here in Blacksburg, the India Health project, and Virginia Tech Campus Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center as a peer educator.

Ning’s leadership qualities separate him from his other classmates. He has dedicated his collegiate career to excelling in leading and assisting others. Ning served as a resident advisor in 2008; a year later he was selected to be a hall director. Ning also served as a teaching assistant with Professor David Schmale in the spring of 2009.  

During his time at Virginia Tech, Ning’s research on prodrugs has been both published and awarded. Ning received the Engel Scholarship, Andersen Consulting Scholarship, and the Student of the Year award for his accomplishments.

Ning is the son of Soon Ho Park of Great Falls, Va.

The Outstanding Senior Awards are presented at the Student Honors Day Banquet each spring. These awards are co-sponsored by the Virginia Tech Alumni Association and the senior class.

The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding student performance in each college of the university. Students are selected on the basis of their grade point average (3.4 or higher on a 4.0 scale) and outstanding performance in several or all of the following areas: academic achievement, extracurricular activities, leadership positions, and contributions of service to the university and/or community.
