Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, Hokie football team to highlight the colors at North Carolina State game
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets continues to partner with the Virginia Tech football team to highlight the colors during the pre-game ceremony at every football game.
Three football players are selected, because of their performance in the last game or during practice, to carry the American flag, the state flag, and the team’s spirit flag as they lead the team onto the field. They carry the flags the length of the field and deliver them to cadets that are waiting for them on the south goal line.
The cadets performing this honor are also selected based on their performance during their training. The cadets render honor to the flags and then securely carry them off the field. At home games three freshman cadets are selected and one or two upper-class cadets receive the flags at away games.
Two cadets were selected for the North Carolina State game. Cadet Christina Devereux of Lusby, Md., a senior majoring in history in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences who is a member of Marine ROTC and a recipient of the Virginia Hughes Blackman Emerging Leader Scholarship and Cadet Lydia Choi of Woodbridge, Va., a sophomore majoring in biochemistry in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences who is a member of Army ROTC will travel to the game to represent the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and to honor the colors.
Devereux was nominated for her outstanding performance as the cadet-in-charge of the recent Senior Military College Conference jointly hosted by the Maj. Gen. W. Thomas Rice Center and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, as well as for her academic excellence and pursuit of personal leader development. Faculty and cadets from seven schools took part in the conference and Devereux led a team of over 25 cadets to make the conference a huge success.
Choi was nominated by her Company Commander, Cadet Maj. David Brock of Princeton, W.Va., a senior majoring in materials science and engineering in the College of Engineering who is a member of the Civilian Track program and the recipient of the Nicholas D. Street '53 Emerging Leader Scholarship and the Lacy O. Brumback '30 and Jane Brumback Bachmann Commandant's Scholarship.
Brock stated, “Cadet Lydia Choi demonstrated her devotion to corps and university values while volunteering as a Blackshirt during New Cadet Week training. Many cadets have commented that she stood out among the other Blackshirts through her hard work ethic and dedication to service. Furthermore, throughout the semester she sets the example for her peers to follow with her strong academic work ethic. Her optimistic and always positive attitude, integrity, and actions are to be commended.”
Future cadets will continue to be selected for this honor based on their performance in the cadet regiment. The program is part of the proud partnership the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets has with the Virginia Tech Athletic Department and the Virginia Tech football team.
