James Littlefield honored with emeritus status
James Littlefield, professor and former head of the Department of Marketing in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the "professor emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the university community since 1984, Littlefield contributed significantly to research and teaching in international marketing and economic development. He authored over 50 academic publications, monographs, and books. He advised universities in Egypt, Albania, and Turkey regarding the development of academic programs in business.
Littlefield taught a variety of marketing courses to both undergraduate and graduate students, specializing in international marketing. He led over 30 education abroad programs and received the Alumni Award for Excellence in International Education. Littefield also counseled numerous undergraduate and graduate students and served on 26 master’s and doctoral committees.
Littlefield served as the head of the Department of Marketing for seven years. He was a member of several editorial boards, reviewer for numerous professional journals, and participant in academic conferences. He was a consultant to numerous firms, non-profit organizations, and government agencies, and served on the boards of directors of the Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties Corporation and the Virginia Tech Employees Federal Credit Union.
Littlefield received his bachelor’s degree from Kent State, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.
