CommunityArtsWork's second annual fall exhibition is themed Whispering Muses: Inspired by Women Artists, aligning with the statewide tribute promoted by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts.

Students, faculty, and staff of art departments at area universities and colleges are eligible to enter at no cost. Members of the Blacksburg Regional Art Association are also eligible to enter. The cost to join the art association as a general member is $20.

Featured artists are the mother/daughter team of Lyndall Mason and Vera Dickerson (also the juror). Both are noted artists and teachers, and Dickerson is past president of the Virginia Watercolor Society and co-founder of The Studio School and the Signature 9 Gallery in Roanoke. An artists’ reception will be held in early September at the Holtzman Alumni Center.

CommunityArtsWork is an initiative of Virginia Tech’s Outreach Program Development, which is part of Outreach and International Affairs. Partners in the initiative are the Alumni Association and School of Visual Arts , in cooperation with the Blacksburg Regional Art Association. The goal is to promote interaction among established and emerging artists, arts advocates, and campus-community partners who view the arts and humanities as vital for understanding our global society.

“There is a vital link between the arts and strong communities, and we want to support these connections,” says Jeri Childers, director of Outreach Program Development at Virginia Tech. “The arts are an essential component of a healthy economy, but they also help facilitate conversations and provide a lens for us to view our world in different ways.”
