Extension's Barbara A. Board honored with emeritus status
Barbara A. Board, of Midlothian, Va., Northeast District Extension director for Virginia Cooperative Extension, has been conferred the "district director emerita" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the Virginia Tech and Virginia Cooperative Extension community since 1978, Board began her Extension career serving core program areas family and consumer sciences, community resource development, and 4-H youth development. She served three years as the unit coordinator for the Amelia County Extension Office.
As the Northeast District Extension director for the past seven years, Board has provided leadership for 22 counties and cities in Northeastern Virginia including direct supervision of 40 district and field Extension faculty and staff, fiscal administration, local and state government relations and support, and district program and volunteer development.
She has served both Virginia Tech and Virginia Cooperative Extension by leading important administrative efforts such as EEO/AA/ Program Compliance, 4-H youth development, and program and leadership development. She also served as a member of the university's Task Force on Race and the Institution, the Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program, and served in leadership roles for Epsilon Sigma Phi, the Extension/Outreach Faculty Association, and the Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
She received her bachelor's degree from Virginia State University; and a master's degree and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.
