University community celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
The Virginia Tech community celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, April 1-30. Typically recognized throughout the United States in the month of May, Virginia Tech celebrates the Asian and Pacific Islander culture in April in order to provide educational and entertainment programs for students before they leave campus for summer break.
Some highlights of the month-long celebration include, the Vietnamese Student Association annual culture show, “Unlikely Heroes: The Powers Within.” The show displays Vietnamese culture and tradition through skits, dances, and performances. Doors open at 7 p.m., April 4 in the Burruss Hall auditorium.
At 6:30 p.m. on April 11 in the Graduate Life Center auditorium join the university community for “Chinabration 2009.” The Chinese American Society hosts this annual program that highlights Chinese culture through traditional and modern performances including, Chinese Yo-Yo, Modern Dance, and Martial Arts.
At 7 p.m. on April 13 in Colonial Hall, Squires Student Center, Cathy Bao Bean presents, “Living and Laughing by the Chopsticks-Fork Principle.” Cathy Bao Bean is the author of a poignant and humorous book, The Chopsticks-Fork Principle, a Memoir and Manual. As she does throughout her book, Bean will give the audience a glimpse into the life of a bicultural family. Immediately following her presentation, a reception will be held in her honor in the Black Cultural Center, Squires Student Center.
Many other events are planned for the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebration. All events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.
