Grammy award-winning artist to perform at university's third annual gospel concert

Grammy-winning, multi-platinum gospel performer Kirk Franklin is the headlining artist for Virginia Tech's third annual gospel concert held during the university's Black History Month celebration.

Franklin will take the stage Feb. 21, 2009, at 5 p.m. in Burruss Hall auditorium. Tickets, which are $20 with Virginia Tech student identification, $20 for children 12 and under, and $25 for the general public, will be available Jan. 30, through the University Unions and Student Activities ticket office in Squires Student Center, online (a processing fee will be added to the price of tickets purchased online), or by phone at (540) 231-5615.

Franklin is credited with transforming the genre of gospel music with his high-energy music style. By incorporating both contemporary and traditional gospel music into his melodic creations, Franklin has created a sound that appeals to the masses, according to his biographical information. Over the last 14 years with hits such as “Stomp,” “Whatcha Lookin’ For,” “Looking for You,” “Revolution,” and “Lean on Me,” Franklin’s music, containing inspirational messages, has resonated with young adult listeners all over the world. His songs reflect conflicts and situations that young adults are struggling to overcome in their daily lives, and according to Franklin, “When you are preaching to young people, you’ve got to speak their language.”

Franklin’s current album, “The Fight of My Life,” contains some of the most dynamic and stylistically varied songs of his career. The album carries a powerful message through spirited choral passages, jazz-infused pieces, rock ‘n’ roll, and his signature praise grooves.

Franklin’s list of music awards includes: five Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, 34 Stellar Awards (Gospel), 12 Dove Awards (Contemporary Christian), four NAACP Awards, two BET Music Awards, and a Soul Train Award.

Onitsha, one of the brightest new stars in contemporary inspirational music, will also perform during the gospel concert. Her current album, “Church Girl,” has succeeded in breaking down the barriers between musical genres and radio formats.

Onitsha has worked with superstar acts such as Mary Mary, Ashanti, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Destiny’s Child, and Stevie Wonder.
