Hayhoe wins top honor in financial counseling and planning education
Celia R. Hayhoe of Christiansburg, Va., an Extension specialist and assistant professor in the Department of Apparel, Housing, and Resource Management in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech, has received the 2007 Distinguished Fellow Award from the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE).
The top award presented by AFCPE recognizes a colleague who merits the highest level of accolades. Election as a Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AFCPE members by their peers and recognizes a national leader in the field of financial counseling and planning education who exhibits the highest standards of professional and ethical career conduct.
Of noted importance in Hayhoe’s professional accomplishments are her collaborative efforts in nationwide programming and curriculum development in areas pertaining to financial management and well-being including debt management, bankruptcy education, estate planning, retirement and long term financial care planning.
The 2007 Distinguished Fellow honoree served both AFCPE and the financial education and counseling profession for the past few decades and represented academic and Extension educators on the AFCPE Executive Board for many years. Hayhoe has a well-respected research program and has developed often cited Extension programs and national curriculum addressing issues of financial and resource management. She is also a Certified Financial Planner® professional. In the letters of nomination and support, she was recognized as a strong leader and a grass-roots listener who understands the importance of relaying research in such a way that is useful to practitioners.
“Dr. Hayhoe has the practitioner knowledge to understand the level of need and the most critical issues, the credentials including the Certified Financial Planner designation, and the academic expertise and knowledge base to change lives through her outreach and Extension responsibilities,” said LuAnn Gaskill, professor and head of the of Department of Apparel, Housing, and Resource Management.
Other honors and awards earned by Hayhoe include the Dean Don Felker Financial Management Award from Virginia Cooperative Extension, an Outstanding Research Award, a New Achievers Award, an Outreach Award from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and three Epsilon Sigma Phi Team Awards.
Hayhoe received her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and Ph.D. for the University of Arizona.
