James K. Washenberger honored with emeritus status
James K. Washenberger of Blacksburg, associate professor of mathematics in College of Science at Virginia Tech, was conferred the "associate professor emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors during the board's quarterly meeting August 27.
The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who have given exemplary service to the university and who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1966, Washenberger has been a respected and popular teacher of a wide range of undergraduate and graduate mathematics courses. He was instrumental in introducing the use of computer technology into the calculus sequence and the use of EXCEL spreadsheet technology into the business calculus sequence. Washenberger has been the director of the mathematics education degree option since its inception and twice directed a revision of its curriculum. He has won many Certificates of Teaching Excellence.
Washenberger received his bachelor’s degree from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University.
