Internationally known education philosopher to speak at Virginia Tech
Internationally known philosopher and scholar Nel Noddings will give a lecture entitled “Critical Lessons for Critical Thinking” on Monday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. at The Inn at Virginia Tech. The talk is sponsored by the School of Education at Virginia Tech.
Noddings, the Lee L. Jacks Professor of Child Education, Emerita, at Stanford University, emphasizes the importance of personal relationships as the foundation for ethical conduct. In addition to 15 books - among them, Critical Lessons: What Our Schools Should Teach (2006), Educating Citizens For Global Awareness (2005), Educating Moral People: A Caring Alternative to Character Education (2002); and, in 2003, Happiness and Education, she is the author of some 200 articles and chapters on various topics, ranging from the ethics of care to mathematical problem solving.
Professor Noddings is a former teacher, administrator and curriculum developer in public schools, and is the recipient of numerous teaching and excellence in education awards. She is past president of the National Academy of Education.
A reception will follow the lecture. This event is free and open to the public.
