Storytelling event in Floyd to benefit Service-Learning Center's Hometown Corps

A benefit storytelling and music evening will be held at the Jacksonville Center for the Arts on Route 8 (South Locust Street), Floyd, Va. from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Thurs., March 23. Admission is free and all ages are invited. Voluntary donations will be accepted to support joint projects between the Virginia Tech Service-Learning Center’s Hometown Corps and the Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley.

“Lies and Pies, Fresh out of the Kitchen” will feature three local women telling funny stories and tall tales, and weaving music into interactive performances. A local restaurant will sell pies. Storytellers will be Kim Weitcamp, Lisa Tabor, and Dinah Akers.

The evening is part of Women’s Month at Virginia Tech and is sponsored by the Hometown Corps Program of the Service-Learning Center at Virginia Tech. The Hometown Corps Program works in local rural communities and with local community agencies on a variety of projects by providing hands-on community service and logistical support for individuals in need.

The Service-Learning Center at Virginia Tech oversees the work of the Hometown Corps and a variety of other community partnerships. In 2005, the Service-Learning Center helped involve over 1,600 students in programs and projects that link academic learning with opportunities for service and outreach in the community.
