Meet the student who designed this year's Hokie socks
Hi. I'm Demetrya. I'm a senior graduating in graphic design, and I plan to graduate in 2027. I always loved art. My senior year of high school, I started taking, like, design classes because I just wanted to be surrounded in that kind of environment. And then that's when I got into graphic design and I applied here at Virginia Tech. Design UP is a class I was a part of in the spring semester, where we work with nonprofit clients and VT socks was one of Well, working with VT socks was amazing because first we were kind of brainstorming like what kind of ideas we wanted to do. Like thinking about like the Hokie experience, like what makes Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech. I started with food, of course, because I was like, Virginia Tech is known for food. You know, we're ranked second, I think. I believe it's second. Well, food is kind of hard. It's like broad, you know? So I was thinking about like what food item is Virginia Tech? And I landed on the turkey leg. And for the jump effect sock, the “Enter Sandman” one, it was inspired by Metallica when they came in the spring of last year, and it was based off this seismograph. And I took that design and I implemented it into the the sock. So right here we have the ‘Jump Effect’ socks. I think right here is when they first enter on stage. And then that's when they start playing “Enter Sandman”. And everybody just goes crazy you know earthquake everything. And then down here we also have it, but instead it says “start jumping.” So when you look down, you're actually looking at like the start jumping. So yeah, that's cool. And of course the Virginia Tech colors. And right here we have the turkey leg design. This is my personal favorite. I did it like in a cartoon shape. And then right here, my personal favorite touch, we took a bite out of the turkey leg. So yeah, that's what I love about this. I want people to feel the memories. You know, just wearing the socks and being like. Yeah, this is a Hokie experience. You know what I'm saying? Something that they can take with them forever and, like, ponder on, you know. I'm Demetrya, and these are my sock designs.
