Center for the Arts brings the joy of music to preschoolers
We are in Giles County at Macy middle elementary school and we are doing Music Monday. Music Monday is something that's happened for the past three years and it is essentially a music field day for preschoolers. Music is a huge, huge factor in early childhood development so being able to bring this to them and in a variety of ways. We have stations that incorporate hand-eye coordination with music, things that incorporate visual arts and music. We have singing, we have actual instrument playing, we have audio recollection. So lots of different stations that accomplish lots of different things but all for their developmental appropriateness. I think it's really important to bring music to kids as young as possible. These kinds of activities, letting kids touch instruments, get to feel them, get to get an understanding of music, rhythm, tempo. That's what first got me into music. And so I think it's really special to then be able to give that back to kids. Having us come to them is very special for these preschoolers to see these high schoolers and these college kids are taking the time out of their day. That's really, really special for them. And it's something that they go back and tell their parents about, that they met a Hokie. So it's very special, makes them feel very highlighted, gives them an extra special end-of-the-year music education moment.
