Inspired by a childhood dream of becoming a doctor and a family that valued education, Assistant Professor Austin Gray discovered his true passion while working in an aquatic toxicology lab at The Citadel. What began as a work-study job cleaning glassware evolved into a career in science, fueled by mentorship, representation, and a growing fascination with environmental research. That experience ultimately led him to pursue graduate studies and focus on the emerging issue of microplastics. Today, his research examines how microplastics and other contaminants affect aquatic ecosystems and human health. He is driven by both scientific curiosity and a desire to address problems that impact communities locally and globally. He also believes scientists have a responsibility to communicate their work openly and honestly, building public trust and ensuring taxpayer-funded research serves the people who support it.
