Understanding complex systems through immersive technologies
Systems Thinking in a Bioeconomy (SBIO 1024) encourages students to see the world through a new lens—one that looks at the
big picture and connects the dots between people, the planet, and the
economy. The course incorporates immersive technologies and guest speakers to expand students' understanding beyond the classroom.
Seeing different systems from different perspectives is incredibly powerful. We learn essentially how do different elements connect and interact to serve a certain goal or function. Today we're going to be viewing a session hosted by ICAT through the Cube focused on Nikki Giovanni, somebody who had a large impact looking at a lot of complex social systems and being able to intervene in a way that created community, that created voice, in a lot of cases for people who didn't have it. It's students really being able to kind of go between understanding how they engage in systems from their position, positionality, their life experience, to how they can learn and start to structure systems in a way that they can intervene in a way to create a future that they believe in.
