Anja Whittington teaches a Wilderness First Responder course at Virginia Tech. She leads students through experiential learning exercises on how to assess injuries, treat and bandage wounds, and apply medical care for people who are recreating in the wilderness.
This class is a wilderness first responder class, so students are learning about how to manage and deal with emergency situations in the backcountry. And not only how to deal with them, but also how to prevent them. And not only that, but you're also learning how to improvise using the resources that you have. There's not going to be an ambulance that shows up with all kinds of equipment. sometimes you may be walking them out or carrying them out or waiting for a rescue crew to come in and help you as well as how to keep people safe and healthy in the backcountry. I'm a four-year student in Arabic and National Security and I chose to take this class because I'm actually a part of the rescue squad it's a lot easier we have the ambulance you have all the equipment I want to see how different is splinting doing improvised tourniquets and all that stuff. I am a CNRE student so my major is environmental resource management and many of the jobs that I'm looking for post graduation are more field technician roles and companies that I've interviewed for and talked to they are looking for that sort of independence and knowing that their employees if you get into some kind of medical situation out in the middle of the woods you know how to handle that. We have several students that are in venture out there becoming trip leaders. A lot of them are you know work in the field for research and then all of them recreate outside with friends and family so they're gaining those sort of skills to prevent injuries as well as help you know when something happens.
