FutureHAUS: A bold vision for faster, smarter housing
Two days. One full-scale house. Endless possibilities for the future of housing. In this fast-paced experiment, students and faculty from Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture took on the FutureHAUS challenge — designing and building a full structure from the ground up in just 48 hours. The goal? To transform the way we build homes and make housing more efficient, affordable, and sustainable.
So we're doing this to advance the industry. FutureHouse is a concept in modularity, where right now the industry is still utilizing stick-built practices. We see the future being built faster, being built with a higher quality, and building that in a prefabricated manner solves all of those issues. I hope that this continues to be adopted by the industry, that Virginia Tech can continue to be a research partner with the industry, to be able to test concepts that feed directly into manufacturing plants and I think that this research in particular is going to advance the speed of construction. Right now the speed of construction I think is what's holding us back from affordability and this concept proves with our two-day exercise that we can build a complete house in two days.
