Andrew Schneider, a performer, writer, and interactive-electronics artist, visits Virginia Tech to work on his recent work in the Cube at the Moss Arts Center. Jacqueline Bruen, a Ph.D. student in Industrial Systems Engineering, and researcher Myounghoon Jeon, are working with a local dancer named Sumin to integrate technology with performance art. While Sumin performs, sensors detecting movement and breathing change the sound design and visual playback on computer screens.

Orchestrating a symphony of connections in community music education

The Virginia Tech String Project is a community enrichment program whose mission is to provide string music education for regional students and prepare future music teachers and educators. Their recent 15th anniversary concert at Moss Arts Center and performance of the National Anthem at a Salem Red Sox game are examples of several special events to celebrate Virginia Tech's dedication to leadership in string music education in the state.

Liminal Spaces: A first-of-its-kind sonic journey through the spaces between

Liminal Spaces is a fully immersive 15-minute sonically-rich, layered audio, spatial experience that was performed inside the Cube at Virginia Tech. A collaboration between Ben Knapp, executive director of the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) and professor of computer science, and Eric Lyon, a music technologist and composer, and professor of composition and creative technologies in the School of Performing Arts, the piece used the one-of-a-kind capabilities of the Cube to completely immerse participants in sound, inviting audience members to experience music in an unprecedented way. Through the piece, audiences explored the time that exists between morning and night, between near and far, between calm and storm. It was a plunge into the time between what was and what comes next. Liminal Spaces is the first piece to make use of a layered immersive spatial audio system, consisting of two high-density loudspeaker arrays (HDLAs): a far-field 140-loudspeaker array (the Cube) and a nearfield 32-loudspeaker array (the Tesseract), coupled with bone conduction headphones. This configuration allowed Ben and Eric to deliver sounds in the range from highly intimate sounds delivered via bone vibrations, all the way to acoustic infinity with the far-field speaker array. A "starburst" array of eight loudspeakers distributed between the Tesseract and the walls of the Cube gave them the ability to explore the liminal spaces between the two main HDLAs. Students explore the creative process with Lucky Plush dance company

A dancer from Lucky Plush Productions gives a group of Virginia Tech students a glimpse into the dance company’s creative process. Watch as Lucky Plush dancer Meghann Wilkinson teaches how she and her colleagues work together to create an authentic experience for audiences. Drawing on the company’s performance, “Trip the Light Fantastic: The Making of Superstrip,” Wilkinson leads participants through a series of improvisational exercises that encourages them to be more creative, live in the moment, be vulnerable, and create relationships with each other in new ways. This approach helps Lucky Plush dancers deliver an authentic performance for their audiences. The Moss Arts Center helps students discover new ways to incorporate creativity into their lives—both inside and outside the classroom.
