Preserving one of Virginia's most unique historic homes

The Octagon House stands as one of Southwest Virginia’s most distinctive historic landmarks, offering a unique window into the region’s architectural, cultural, and social history. This video explores the ongoing efforts to document and preserve the house through modern technologies such as LiDAR and 3D scanning, while also examining its significance within the broader story of Smyth County. Through the perspectives of descendants, preservation advocates, and researchers, the project highlights the importance of safeguarding historic places and ensuring that their stories remain accessible to future generations. At the heart of this work is a commitment to telling a more complete history of the Octagon House, including the contributions of the enslaved men and women whose labor made its construction possible. As restoration and research continue, the site is emerging as a center for historical interpretation, education, and community engagement. By preserving both the physical structure and the stories connected to it, project leaders hope to create a lasting resource that honors the past while supporting cultural and economic development across the region.
