Exhibit honors the legacy of Dr. Gladys West

Mathematician Gladys West’s ’00 inspirational career paved the way for the Global Positioning System and forever changed navigation. Her story is now on display in a new mobile exhibit underwritten by Trimble in the lobby of the newly opened Academic Building One at Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus in Alexandria. The exhibit will remain through June 2025 and is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm.

Virtual exhibit becomes education tool for local schools

The Vauquois Experience Exhibit is finding a new purpose just three years after its debut at the 2019 ACCelerate Festival at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Todd Ogle, the executive director of Applied Research in Immersive Experiences and Simulations in the University Libraries, has turned the exhibit into an education tool for local middle and high school students to learn about World War I.

University Libraries features Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition

The Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition presents viewers with primary source information that examines the motives, pressures and fears that influenced America's response to Nazi Germany and genocide during the 1930s and 1940s. The exhibition can be found on the fourth floor of Newman Library on Virginia Tech's Blacksburg campus.

"Color of Freedom" exhibit inspires minority women in service

Amanda Wyche, a senior in the Corps of Cadets and Army R.O.T.C., shares how the stories of the women featured in the traveling exhibit "Color of Freedom" inspire and encourage her as she looks towards her own leadership journey in the United States Army. Brought to Virginia Tech by the Military Women’s Memorial, and hosted through a partnership between the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and University Libraries, the traveling exhibit honors the diversity of America’s servicewomen and hopes to build awareness of the sacrifices of women from diverse backgrounds who forged a path for women of all backgrounds to serve in and with the U.S. military. The exhibit will be on display February 10 through March 16 on the library’s fourth floor, across from the Corps of Cadets Museum space. Preparing ancient fossils to become a modern digital exhibit

Sterling Nesbitt, Associate Professor for the Department of Geosciences in the College of Science, is working on preparing fossils of Teleocrater for 3-D printing and digitization. This exhibit is set to be an interactive experience that can be viewed from anywhere in the world. This work is supported by the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT).

SOVA exhibition comes to Hahn Horticulture Garden

Hiromi Okumura of the School of Visual Arts is hosting a semester-end art showcase for students in her Drawing for Non-Majors class at the Hahn Horticulture Garden. The show will be a window show due to COVID-19 and will be held at the Garden Pavilion through Sunday, Nov. 15.

Virginia Tech in the 1960s exhibit

The VT in the 1960s exhibit is a culmination of a class project from the class America in the 1960s. The class surveys the big picture of the 1960s, charting all kinds of social, political, and cultural change. To create the posters, students flipped through copies of The Virginia Tech newsletter, housed in Special Collections and University Archives, to find an article that stood out to them. Focusing on the history of student life at Virginia Tech was a great way to apply the historical information in a way that was relatable and allowed them to place that information into the bigger historical context.

In Search of Beauty

In Search of the Beauty of Nature by Tianming Zhao is an exhibit featuring watercolor paintings and leaf prints inspired by natural beauty. The appreciation of nature is always a guideline for organic architecture. Each leaf, twig and stone have stories to tell, and when combined, they compose a sonata of art and architecture. In a similar but more abstract way, the skills of watercolor are often applied to express the beauty of nature. This exhibit was on display along the Art & Architecture Gallery wall, located in the Art & Architecture library in Cowgill Hall. Fries Exhibit located in Special Collections and University Archives

Last year, the University Libraries’ Special Collections and University Archives department received a $68,722 grant to preserve and make accessible decades of materials that tell the complex story of Fries, Virginia, and its textile mill. The grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the grants-making arm of the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, will fund a one-year archivist position to process the collection, organize community events, and promote the town’s history through outreach and exhibits. Renowned Artist Jane Lillian Vance to show her work at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine

The next art show at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine will feature six decades of work by acclaimed artist Jane Lillian Vance. This Artist Spotlight explores her motivations, ideology, and reasoning behind holding an art show of this magnitude at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Described as “painted journalism,” the exhibits will include extraordinary works from Vance’s travels in the name of hope and healing to Africa and South Asia as well as her efforts as Vice President of the national non-profit Help Save the Next Girl. Madrid artist creates, installs artwork for Moss Arts Center lobby

For the third major public art commission at the Moss Arts Center, Daniel Canogar (Madrid) has created a site-specific sequence of dynamic, data-fed sculptural forms. "Surge" encompasses thousands of flickering LED lights in moving, ever-changing, computer-generated abstract images that glide across four sinuous, ribbon-like sculptural elements.Responding in real time to incoming data—ranging from internet traffic at Virginia Tech and energy consumption in the Moss Arts Center to regional wind speeds and temperatures—the generative visuals of "Surge" flow continuously across four walls.

FutureHAUS Dubai Exhibition on Virginia Tech's Drillfield

After winning the 2018 Solar Decathlon Middle East in Dubai, FutureHAUS Dubai comes home to Virginia Tech for a one month exhibition in April. FutureHAUS is also open to the public, showcasing its state of the art design. After its stint on campus, FutureHAUS Dubai will ship to New York City at Times Square, for its annual design week.

Stories Not Symptoms

The University Libraries’ exhibit Stories Not Symptoms: An Exhibition of Graphic Medicine, located on the fourth floor of Newman Library, highlights the combination of the bright and whimsical nature of comic books with the medical jargon of disease and illness to tell the health stories of individuals. Through the abstract art, comics add approachability and emotion to the stories and clinical data. The exhibit features work by multiple graphic medicine artists and an interactive opportunity for visitors to create their own graphic medicine.

How Tech Ticks: The art behind the exhibit

MLK Display in Special Collections

The Martin Luther King, Jr. display highlights items in the University's collections where the black community chose not to be silent and to stand up for their rights. The display was created by Anthony Wright de Hernandez and Laurel Rozema.

Heartworks: 2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Annual School-Aged Children & Teen Art Exhibit

The Perspective Gallery at Squires Student Center is hosting a new exhibit, representing the work of regional K-12 students. Heartworks are visual representations of how participants chose to “stick with love.” The exhibit runs Jan. 22 through Feb. 17 and a reception will be held Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. At the center of the gallery is a sound booth, a collaboration between Newman Library and the Black Cultural Center. Patrons visiting this exhibit may record their stories about love which will be included in Perspective Gallery’s spring Black Love exhibit.

Tunnel Vision: Immersive technology brings the tunnels of Vauquois, France to Blacksburg

The physical and virtual worlds come together in this unique immersive environment exhibit at the University Libraries at Virginia Tech. Experience walking through post World War I tunnels in the northern France village of Vauquois. This exhibit was created and curated to be rich in history, information, and to encourage empathy as users discover what it was like to be a soldier during that time.
