Virginia Tech to host Metallica concert on May 7; important announcements regarding university operations
From: The Office of the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost
Virginia Tech will host a concert by Metallica on the evening of Wednesday, May 7, at 6 p.m. The Blacksburg campus will close to normal university business at 12 p.m.
The traffic impact on the university community for events such as this is especially acute on a weekday evening. Therefore, the university will take steps to ensure the orderly flow of traffic and increase safety across the Blacksburg campus:
- All in-person classes in Blacksburg ending later than 12 p.m. will be shifted online.
- All online classes will continue as scheduled.
- University employees who have remote or hybrid work agreements and schedules are expected to work remotely on Wednesday, May 7. These personnel will work their normal work schedule at their alternate work site, consistent with University Policy No. 4305: Authorized Closings Leave and Compensation Policy.
- University employees who wholly perform their duties on the Blacksburg campus will use authorized closing leave for the hours they would normally work during the authorized closing.
- Administrative offices and non-instructional offices in Blacksburg will close at 12 p.m. This will reduce the number of faculty and staff on campus, help relieve traffic congestion, and facilitate other operational procedures for the Wednesday night event.
- Designated emergency personnel who are required to work by their supervisor will receive authorized closing leave for their time worked.
For questions about leave during an authorized closing, refer to University Policy No. 4305. If employees have additional questions, they should contact their supervisor or HR representative.
