After review by the IT Security Office and the AI working committee of IT Governance, three new Google AI tools are available at Virginia Tech.

Available to employees and students, and currently offered by Google at no additional cost:

  • Gemini App: Gemini is a standalone AI assistant that you can access directly from the search field at Google.com, or as an app. Gemini offers features like generating text, brainstorming ideas, summarizing information, creating images, and answering questions using multimodal inputs (text, voice, images).
  • NotebookLM: NotebookLM is an AI-powered research assistant that works solely with content that you upload to it (PDFs, Google Docs, YouTube videos, Web URLs, text files, etc.). It can help organize ideas, develop summaries, and scan for insights across various sources.

Available to employees through department purchase:

  • Google AI Pro: Google AI Pro integrates AI directly into Google Workspace applications like Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet, and provides expanded access to premium models and features in the Gemini app and NotebookLM. Visit https://software.vt.edu/deptsoftware/googleaipro.html for more information on how departments can purchase this add-on for employees.

These products have been reviewed by the IT Security Office and are approved for use with high-risk data. Be sure to log into your VT Google account when using these tools – this will ensure that any data you enter will not be used to train AI models but will remain secure within your Virginia Tech account.
