New student employees: complete your required IT security training
From: Division of Information Technology
Are you starting a student wage or graduate assistant job at Virginia Tech for the first time this semester?
Virginia Tech requires student employees to complete a brief, online IT security training course within 90 days of beginning employment with the university.
The course, Cybersecurity Essentials for Student Employees, is designed to help you recognize and avoid common cybersecurity threats such as social engineering and phishing attacks, practice responsible stewardship of sensitive data and safe online browsing, and learn how to report suspicious activity.
Who is required to take Cybersecurity Essentials for Student Employees?
- Student-wage employees
- Graduate assistants
If you are in one of these groups, you are required to complete this course within 90 days of starting employment at the university, and annually thereafter.
Check your Virginia Tech email!
If you are required to take the training, you will receive an email notification from “VT Training <info-968@mail.pageuppeople.com>” when the course is assigned to you — for most student employees, this will be shortly after your start date. If you took the training last fall, you do not need to take it again this spring; the training will be reassigned to you when your next due date is approaching.
When and where to take the training
Cybersecurity Essentials for Student Employees can be accessed through the PageUp Learning Management System on a computer or mobile device. To get to the course, go to https://virginiatech.pageuppeople.com/learning/11850. You will need to log in with your VT Username and password.
Because this is required for your job with Virginia Tech, you need to take the training while you are clocked in. Please talk to your supervisor about arranging for 20 minutes to complete it.
