Campus impacts: New Residence Halls construction underway

To accommodate construction staging and ensure pedestrian and driver safety, several campus pathways, parking areas, and travel routes will be adjusted during the New Residence Halls capital construction project.
Please note that the four New Residence Halls will be constructed near Duck Pond Drive and neighboring other facilities including the Classroom Building, Hitt Hall, Data and Decision Sciences Building, Undergraduate Science Laboratory Building, and the Transit Center.
West Campus Drive sidewalk: The sidewalk on the west side of West Campus Drive at the Perry Street intersection will be closed, re-routing pedestrians to the sidewalk on the east side of West Campus Drive. Signage will be in place to assist pedestrians with navigation.
Holtzman Alumni Center:
South driveway entrance: Construction traffic will periodically cross the south driveway. Drivers and pedestrians should use caution and be prepared to yield to construction traffic crossing at the direction of a flag operator.
Parking: In coordination with Virginia Tech Parking Services, six parking spaces in the lot southeast of the Holtzman Alumni Center will be removed starting the week of June 8 to accommodate pathway improvements.
Duck Pond Drive:
The asphalt path adjacent to Duck Pond Drive will be temporarily re-routed to accommodate construction of a new entrance. Golf cart drivers and pedestrians should use caution and be prepared to yield to construction traffic when crossing at the new entrance.
A temporary single-lane closure of Duck Pond Drive, expected to last no more than one week, will be scheduled and communicated in advance.

Fencing and trailers will be in place throughout the construction process, which is targeted for completion in fall 2028.
Drivers and pedestrians may also utilize the Campus Closure Map to assist with navigation.

The New Residence Halls capital project — consisting of four new residence halls — targets completion for occupancy at the start of the 2028-29 academic year. Totaling approximately 1,200 beds, the new residence halls will strengthen connections from residential districts to other student-centric facilities, as well as to recreation spaces and transit infrastructure. Designed in the collegiate gothic style, consistent with campus design principles, and closely matching the most recently completed residence hall, Upper Quad Hall North, each of the five-story buildings will feature contemporary rooms capable of accommodating more than 300 residents.
