Virtual parking permits begin this fall

Beginning this fall, Virginia Tech will transition to a new virtual parking permit system for campus parking. Physical permits will no longer be issued. Instead, your license plate will serve as your parking permit. This update supports Parking Services’ goals of modernization, efficiency, sustainability, and improved customer experience.
Faculty and staff permit sales
Virtual permits for faculty and staff will be available beginning July 27 through the online Parking Portal.
Once purchased, your permit will be active immediately — no temporary permit is needed. Your license plate will serve as your parking permit.
How to purchase a permit
Visit the Parking Services website and log in to the Parking Portal using your Virginia Tech credentials.
- Select the permit option that applies to you.
- Enter your vehicle and license plate information carefully.
- Only selected vehicles will be associated with the permit.
- Review and accept the terms and conditions for payroll deduction.
- Complete your purchase.
- Receive confirmation by email.
Please ensure all vehicle information is accurate and up to date. Temporary plates as well as rental vehicles must be registered, and a vehicle's license plate must face the drive lane when parked. Incorrect information, unregistered, or unreadable license plates may result in a citation.
Payroll deduction option
Faculty and staff may choose to pay in full or participate in payroll deduction when purchasing a permit.
All faculty and staff, including employees currently enrolled in payroll deduction, must complete a permit purchase online this year as part of the transition to the virtual permit system. After this year’s purchase, eligible payroll deduction permits will automatically renew moving forward.
Faculty and staff who wish to use payroll deduction with auto-renewal must select the Faculty/Staff Annual Auto-Renewing permit option when purchasing their permits. Employee payroll deductions will be offered and distributed across pay periods year-round in every paycheck. Permits will renew automatically with continuous deductions until Parking Services is notified in writing via email.
Employees eligible for the 30-Year Faculty/Staff Permit should select the 27 FACULTY STAFF / FS 30 Years of Service option.
Permit pricing
Permit prices for the 2026-27 year on the Blacksburg campus are:
- Full year F/S: $465
- Fall semester F/S: $279
- Spring semester F/S: $279
- Monthly F/S: $70
- Remote lot F/S: $47
- Carpool F/S year: $326
Cashless Parking Services operations
Parking Services is now a cashless operation.
Effective July 1, cash and check payments are no longer accepted.
Customers may continue to use approved electronic payment options online, in the Parking Portal, through supported payment platforms, and we do accept credit card payments in the Parking Office.
North End Parking Garage access
Because physical permits will no longer be issued, RFID permit access at the North End Parking Garage will be discontinued.
Faculty and staff with permit access will instead scan their Hokie Passports for entry and exit.
This change provides a simpler and more consistent access method moving forward.
ParkMobile is moving to select locations
ParkMobile remains a convenient and easy option for hourly and short-term parking on campus. Beginning this year, ParkMobile will be available only in select lots, primarily located in the peripheral areas of campus. Each approved ParkMobile lot will be clearly marked with signage displaying its unique zone number.
Before submitting payment through the ParkMobile app, please verify that you are parked in a designated ParkMobile area and enter the correct zone number. ParkMobile payments are valid only in approved ParkMobile locations.
If you need to park for the day in your affiliated parking area, daily parking permits are available for purchase through the Parking Portal.
