Noise amplification alert: Historic Smithfield cannon firing

In support of its 18th century Independence Day event at Historic Smithfield on Saturday, June 29, a 12-pounder cannon will be fired three times with blank cartridges at Smithfield in an area checked for safety downrange.

Firing schedule:

• First shot: 11 a.m. to accompany a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence.
• Second shot: 1 p.m. during a ceremony dedicating a "Liberty Tree."
• Third shot: 2 p.m. to conclude the event.

Please be advised that these cannon firings will produce loud noises.
