E-scooter research study to conclude May 31

From: The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute; Transportation Services

The naturalistic driving study exploring e-scooter safety on Virginia Tech's Blacksburg campus will conclude on May 31. The study was led by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, Ford, and micromobility company, Spin.

The orange e-scooters will no longer be available to rent on campus after May 31, but may return at some point in the future.

The e-scooter data collected from the study will be analyzed by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute and factors that contribute to e-scooter safety, including rider behavior, interactions with other road users and infrastructure elements, and other valuable safety data will be analyzed to provide deployment recommendations to municipalities to use when incorporating e-scooters safely into their communities.

Outcomes of the study will be available via VTx in fall 2022.

Questions may be directed to Elizabeth White, programs and business manager at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, at lizzieb3@vt.edu or (540) 231-7293.
