Reminder: Drone use on campus requires approval

From: Emergency Management

Flying drones on campus is permitted only under specific conditions to ensure the safety of operators and the campus community. All drone operators must:

  • Hold a FAA Pilot Certificate or meet FAA flight authorization qualifications

  • Complete the Virginia Tech UAS Training

  • Obtain written approval from the UAS Safety Office through the online flight request system

  • Register their aircraft with the Virginia Tech Risk Management Office

Full details on these requirements can be found on the Flying on Campus webpage.

Recreational flying at the Drone Park

Students, faculty, and staff who want to fly recreationally can reserve time at the Virginia Tech Drone Park at no cost. Reservations allow you to bring your own aircraft (must be approved by Drone Park staff) or fly an aircraft provided by the Drone Park. Advanced training, including preparation for the FAA Part 107 certification, is also available. Learn more at the Drone Park webpage.

Football game day restrictions

On home football game days, the FAA issues a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over campus. It is a violation of federal regulations to operate a drone during a TFR. Penalties include steep fines in the thousands of dollars.
