Transportation options for traveling home for holidays and breaks

Many students are likely considering the most convenient and budget-friendly options for traveling home during breaks and holidays. Don’t wait until the last minute to secure a ride.
Virginia Tech Sustainable Transportation encourages students to take advantage of the many different options available for getting home on break.
Within Blacksburg and the local area:
Blacksburg Transit: Blacksburg Transit (BT) is the local bus system that services Blacksburg and Christiansburg. Passengers can also use BT to make connections to other bus lines, with routes connecting to Radford, Roanoke, and Washington, D.C. BT is currently fare free for all riders.
Smart Way: The Smart Way Bus provides service between the Roanoke Valley and the Virginia Tech Blacksburg campus (including the Blacksburg-Roanoke Regional Airport) for free with a Hokie Passport. Note that the service does not run on Sundays.
Around Virginia and beyond:
Virginia Breeze: The Virginia Breeze is an intercity bus service. Their Valley Flyer route connects Blacksburg, Virginia with Union Station in Washington, D.C. and includes several stops in the New River Valley, Shenandoah Valley, and Northern Virginia. Additionally, their Highlands Rhythm route stops at the Christiansburg park and ride lot and travels south to Bristol.
Amtrak: Amtrak's closest train station to Virginia Tech is in Roanoke. To get there from campus, select Blacksburg as the starting point on the Amtrak website and a Smart Way bus fare from the Squires stop will be included in the price of the ticket.
OurBus: OurBus is an intercity bus service connecting Blacksburg to most metropolitan areas in Virginia as well as Washington, D.C. and the Charlotte International Airport. Buses depart Thursday - Monday from Lane Stadium.
CollegeTransit: CollegeTransit is a bus service that provides students with holiday break transportation between Lane Stadium and metro areas in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York, as well as the Charlotte International Airport.
Other options:
Carpooling: Faculty, staff, and students can take advantage of free carpool matching through ConnectingVA. The application makes finding carpool partners easy by maintaining a database of people who are interested in carpooling. Membership is free and provides access to carpool matching, a Guaranteed Ride Home program, contests, incentives, and more.
