Section of Huckleberry Trail to close for bridge and infrastructure repairs beginning Nov. 3

From: Parking Services

A section of the Huckleberry Trail in Montgomery County will close beginning Nov. 3, for repairs to bridges and trail infrastructure.

Project details

The closure will extend from Bridge 1 to the Hightop Road area. This portion of the trail is highlighted in yellow on the map shown below. The total estimated cost for this bridge and infrastructure improvement project is $1 million.

Trail access impacts

The closure will not affect the trail entrance at Uptown Christiansburg/Mall; however, construction will begin approximately one mile from this entrance when heading toward Blacksburg. Access northbound from Hightop Road toward Blacksburg will remain open. Coal Mining Heritage Park will be closed during this time.

This section of the trail will be closed to both pedestrians and cyclists for the duration of the project, and no detour will be available due to the nature of the work. The trail is expected to reopen in March 2026.

Additional information

While any trail closure is inconvenient, the winter months were selected for this work due to lower trail usage. Signage has been posted along the Huckleberry Trail in both Blacksburg and Christiansburg to indicate the closed section.
