2022 update on Virginia Tech's Design and Construction Standards Manual now available

The 2022 update for the Design and Construction Standards Manual is now available on the Design and Construction Standards webpage. The Design and Construction Standards Manual is updated annually to clarify design and construction requirements, address changes in university policies, or incorporate applicable requirements from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The 2022 Design and Construction Standards Manual was signed into effect on July 1 and will apply to all new construction contracts. Projects already under contract may use the updated standards for designs after consulting with the project manager.
The version update document, also posted on the Design and Construction Standards webpage, contains the summary of changes for the 2022 Design and Construction Standards Manual.
Changes include an expansion of the permit requirements for temporary structures, the reorganization of several sections including elevators and drawing requirement sections, and the incorporation of applicable changes from the latest edition of the Virginia Construction and Professional Services Manual.
Several appendices, details, forms, and checklists are companion documents to the Design and Construction Standards Manual and these are posted on the Design and Construction Standards webpage or on the linked Forms Library page or Detail Library page.
This year, a new appendix was added and several forms and checklists were updated. A summary of the changes from the 2021 to the 2022 versions of the documents is available on the Design and Construction Standards webpage.
Stakeholder involvement in Design and Construction Standards Manual updates is encouraged. Feedback or questions can be submitted through the designstandards@vt.edu email address. Stakeholders can request individual meetings or can participate in monthly group meetings to discuss developments and changes for the standards.
A brief training presentation for the 2022 Design and Construction Standards Manual is scheduled for July 28. A link to the Zoom session can be requested through designstandards@vt.edu.
