Microsoft is ending support for Exchange Web Services, affecting some email applications
Users of certain EWS-dependent email applications must switch to a supported email app before February 1, 2027
From: Division of Information Technology
Microsoft is discontinuing support for Exchange Web Services (EWS), a legacy connection method used by some email applications, including Apple Mail and Outlook for Mac “Legacy” mode. Virginia Tech has negotiated a temporary exception to this change that will allow EWS-dependent email applications to remain functional until Feb. 1, 2027. Users of these email clients must move to a supported version of Outlook before Feb. 1, 2027, to avoid service disruption.
Those who use Apple Mail, Apple’s calendar app, or Outlook for Mac “Legacy” mode to access Virginia Tech email should take note that the following EWS-dependent email apps will stop syncing and will no longer be able to send or receive messages after the temporary exception ends on Feb. 1, 2027. Impacted email clients and calendaring applications include but may not be limited to:
- Apple Mail (Mac desktop app)
- Apple Calendar (Mac desktop calendaring app)
- Outlook for Mac “Legacy” mode (Mac desktop app)
- Fantastical 2 for Mac
- Cronofy (Windows/Mac desktop Outlook integration)
- Titanium Schedule Calendar Sync (Windows desktop app)
- EdisonMail (all platforms)
- Gnome Evolution (Linux)
- Morgen Desktop (Windows/Mac/Linux calendar sync app)
- Canary Mail (all platforms)
How to prepare
Install or begin using the latest version of the Outlook app for desktop (Windows or Mac), the Outlook Mobile app, or Outlook on the Web (OWA). Both Outlook “Classic” and “New Outlook” are supported versions of Outlook for Windows. For Outlook for Mac “Legacy” mode users can simply disable the "Legacy Outlook” toggle and choose “Switch to Outlook.”
These modern clients offer more robust protection, reliability, and security integration. After Feb. 1, 2027, the temporary exception will end, and applications that still rely on EWS will no longer function with Virginia Tech email.
Virginia Tech Gmail access for alumni or certain retirees will not be impacted.
