Set up multi-factor authentication for Cardinal login

From: Human Resources

The Cardinal Project sent an email to state employees on March 25, 2026, with the subject “Cardinal MFA Update – SMS and Phone Options End April 27.” If you received this email, please disregard it.

The Division of Human Resources has created recommended options for Virginia Tech employees and is encouraging everyone to use them.

If you have not set up multi-factor authentication for Cardinal login, please do so now before Cardinal’s deadline of April 27. Employees are encouraged to adhere to this deadline to avoid any issues for the upcoming benefits open enrollment period.

Employees should use either Duo or Okta Verify for multi-factor authentication with the Cardinal system. Both options require a smart phone for setting up. In addition, Cardinal passwords reset every 90 days. If employees have not reset their password recently, they will be prompted to do so the next time they log into Cardinal.

More information, including instructions for setting up multi-factor authentication, can be found on HR’s Cardinal web page. For other questions or concerns, email the HR Service Center.
