Catawba Sustainability Center to host bale grazing workshop

From: Catawba Sustainability Center

The Catawba Sustainability Center, in partnership with Virginia Cooperative Extension and Roanoke County, will host a half-day workshop on Feb. 13 focused on bale grazing strategies for cattle. Designed to help farmers reduce time spent feeding hay and improve pasture quality, the workshop will highlight research-based best practices for bale grazing and will include both classroom and field components to offer practical, hands-on learning.

The workshop will begin with a classroom discussion from 9-11 a.m. led by Greg Halich, an extension agricultural economist with the University of Kentucky and an experienced grass-finished cattle farmer. From 11 a.m.-noon, John Fike, professor in the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences, will lead a field session at the 377-acre Roanoke County farm.

Open to students, faculty, and community members, the workshop offers immediately applicable strategies for sustainable agriculture and pasture management.
