App integrations in Microsoft 365 will require review beginning in November

From: Division of Information Technology

To enhance security and compliance, the Division of IT is implementing a new process for third-party app integrations and add-ins in our Microsoft 365 environment. On Nov. 5, the division will block all new, unreviewed items and requests for new ones can be submitted for consideration by visiting Marketplace App Requests

Third-party apps and integrations are typically added to provide expanded functionality to various Microsoft 365 products. The change applies specifically to integrated apps and add-ins developed by external vendors (not Microsoft) that users can connect to Microsoft 365 services such as Outlook, Teams, or OneDrive. These apps often request permission to access user data or perform actions within Microsoft 365. However, these apps can introduce security vulnerabilities, data privacy concerns, compliance risks, and performance issues. Vetting these integrations and blocking those that are not compliant ensures that our systems remain secure.

What will be impacted

This change prevents the use of new integrations with various Microsoft 365 products; including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Planner, Project, PowerApps, and Forms until they complete the review process.

What will not be impacted

Existing integrations, add-ins, and enterprise applications in current use will not be affected but will be reviewed later.

Enterprise applications are typically registered and managed centrally by the Division of IT for organizational use (e.g., SSO-enabled apps, internal tools, or trusted vendor solutions) are not affected by this change.
