Academic Building One parking permits available Aug. 15 for 2025-26 academic year

Parking permits for Virginia Tech’s Academic Building One in Alexandria will be available for purchase starting Aug. 15 for the 2025–26 academic year.

Annual permits
The annual parking permit costs $1,740 and is valid from the date of purchase through Aug. 31, 2026. That cost averages to about $145 per month. Permits can be purchased through the Virginia Tech Parking Services Portal using one of the following payment methods:

  • Payroll deduction (faculty/staff only): Pre-tax payroll deductions are available for eligible employees. If a permit is purchased after payroll processing begins, multiple deductions may occur initially to cover prior periods. The last day to enroll is Oct. 24, 2025. Deductions occur monthly.

  • Bursar account (students): Students may charge the full amount to their bursar account. This option is available until Sept. 1, 2025.

  • Credit card (all users): A one-time credit card payment is available for any buyer.

Short-term permits
Virginia Tech offers additional parking options for flexibility:

  • Monthly permit: $200 per month, available through the Parking Services Portal.

  • Daily/hourly permits:

    • Hourly: $4 per hour (up to 3 hours)

    • Daily: $20 per day
      Purchase using ParkMobile or by pulling a ticket at the parking garage entrance.

Sustainable transportation options

  • Commonwealth Commuter Choice:
    Faculty and staff who commute at least once per month may qualify for monthly SmartBenefits in the form of free, pre-tax SmarTrip credit. These benefits can be used for eligible vanpools, MARC, VRE, MTA Commuter Bus, MetroAccess, and more.

  • U-Pass Program:
    Full-time students enrolled in at least one in-person course are automatically enrolled in U-Pass, which provides unlimited rides on Metrorail and Metrobus for roughly $1 per day. This cost is included in student comprehensive fees.

  • Capital Bikeshare:
    Located near the Academic Building One, Capital Bikeshare provides low-cost access to over 700 stations and 6,000 bikes across the D.C. metro area.

    • Virginia Tech students are eligible for annual memberships at $25.

    • Membership includes unlimited 45-minute rides on classic bikes.

    • E-bikes are available at $0.10 per minute, with a $2 fee to lock to any bike rack.

Additional information

  • Digital permits only: All parking permits are digital. Click here to learn how to use your digital permit for garage gate access.

  • Campus-specific: Alexandria and Blacksburg parking permits are not interchangeable.

  • All vehicles must pay: This includes state-owned vehicles and rentals through Fleet Services.

  • Vehicle changes: Contact Parking Services if you change vehicles, get new plates, or use a rental car.

  • Discount for 30-year employees: Eligible Alexandria campus employees with 30 or more years of service may choose a discounted permit option. The discounted price is $1,285 (equal to the full annual cost minus the cost of a Blacksburg permit, $455). This option must be selected at the time of purchase.
