Join other Virginia institutions for the Summer 2025 Movement Challenge
From: Hokie Wellness
This summer, you have the chance to embark on a virtual journey exploring the Appalachian Trail’s top 10 hikes in Virginia, together with employees at universities and colleges across the state.
A full quarter of the 2,135-mile Appalachian Trail (AT) is right here in Virginia, leaving outdoor lovers with around 550 miles of hiking glory. The AT features scenic hikes overlooking cultural and historical sites and even a trail town. Participants will learn the hikes’ length, notable features, detailed information, nearby attractions, and helpful “know before you go” tips.
Offered through Hokie Wellness here at Virginia Tech, the Summer 2025 Movement Challenge is Monday, June 9, to Friday, Aug. 15, and welcomes not just walking but all forms of movement. While each “hike” varies in distance, the goal is to walk or move one mile a day. An average mile takes approximately 15 minutes to walk. Employees are encouraged to opt for intentional movement throughout each hike rather than converting the number of steps you take in a day.
If you are interested in participating, complete this registration form no later than May 30 to be added to the Summer 2025 Movement Challenge listserv. Each Monday, participants will receive a form to record the previous week's walking miles via email. Hokie Wellness will also provide photos and details about the hikes, useful information on mental health well-being, and a related task or “call to action” to complete during the week. Participants who complete each week’s check-in will receive the choice of a super soft, high-quality T-shirt or hat — even if the total 58 miles is not completed!
Hokie Wellness will host a meet-up for challenge participants this summer; date and location will be provided at a later time. The Summer 2025 Movement Challenge is sponsored by Grant Irby, Realtor. For more information or questions, contact Hokie Wellness at hokiewellness@vt.edu.
