February programs will focus on relationships of all kinds.
Jan. 28, 11-11:30 a.m.: Healthy Boundaries for Professionals (Hybrid): In this 30-minute session, practice setting boundaries for the workplace and beyond. Prior to attending, watch the 30-minute video (link is also available in PageUp) that explores types of boundaries and skills to communicate our needs with others. The workshop will be held in Newman Library, room 207A and by Zoom. Registration is required.
Jan. 30, 1-1:45 p.m.: Liven Up Your Lunchbox (Online): Need help with packing your lunch? Join Hokie Wellness for this virtual program that will address the benefits of a healthy lunch, why it matters, four strategies for success, and helpful products and resources. Registration is required.
Feb. 4, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.: Relationship Green Flags (Hybrid): Come join us in a lively program to learn about relationship "green flags,” both personal and professional, presented by Jennifer Wiggins, Virginia Tech’s director of sexual and gender-based violence prevention education. This class will be held in the North End Center, room 2410 and by Zoom. Registration is required.
Planning for Baby (Online): Planning for Baby programs are for employees who are expecting the birth of a child or for new parents of a child under three months of age. Topics to be discussed include benefits, leave, and resources available to new parents.
- Feb. 4, 11-11:30 a.m.: For Staff: Registration is required.
- Feb. 13, 12:30-1 p.m.: For Faculty: Registration is required.
Feb. 6, 12-1 p.m.: Weight Training for Life: Resistance Training (In-Person): Not comfortable with weight training? This is the class for you! In this initial class, Rodney Gaines with the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise will do some initial assessments, explore resistance training, and provide important information about weight training. The class will be held in the North End Center, room 2410. Registration is required.
Mental Health First Aid: This class takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and substance-use by improving understanding and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address issues as they arise. Two training options are available this month:
- Feb. 7, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (Online): This class will be held by Zoom. Registration is required.
- Feb. 19, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (In-Person): This class will be held in person at the North End Center. Registration is required.
Feb. 7, 12-1 p.m.: Take a Brain Break (In-Person): Join Hokie Wellness for a mid-day brain break. Bring your lunch and make a DIY craft. Materials will be provided. This workshop will be held in the North End Center, room 2410. Registration is required.
Feb. 11, 2-3 p.m.: Key to Connection (Online): In this virtual workshop, participants will learn how social connection is key to promoting resiliency, discuss different types of social support, and practice communication skills. Registration is required.
Feb. 14, 12-1 p.m.: Cooking for YOU (In-Person): A scalable meal to meet your needs. For Valentine’s Day you may think about cooking for two but often we cook for one or many more than two. Learn how to adjust a meal plan to suit your needs in this hands-on cooking class. Space is limited; registration is required. This program will be held at Wallace Hall, room 403. Registration is required.
Feb. 18, 12:15-1 p.m.: Mindful Meetings (In-Person): Learn how to create the conditions that allow for focused attention, thoughtful responses, deeper connection between participants, and more. This program will be held in person in the North End Center, room 2410. Registration is required.
Feb. 20, 12-1 p.m.: Community Resilience Model for Parents (Online): The workshop will focus on the six wellness skills of the Community Resilience Model (CRM), designed to help adults and children learn to track their own nervous systems and to encourage people to pass the skills along to others. Registration is required
Feb. 21, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.: “Improv” Your Communication (In-Person): Join Talent Development and Hokie Wellness for a fun, interactive, and engaging in-person workshop that explores the benefits of learning the foundational aspects of improvisation and how those skills can be used to enhance communication. This workshop will be held in the North End Center, room 2470. Registration is required.
Feb. 24, 5:30-7:30 p.m.: REVIVE! (In-Person): Come learn more about opioids, addiction, and how to respond in an emergency. Attendees will receive an emergency response kit to take with you free of charge. This workshop will be held in McComas Hall, room 198. Registration is required.
Feb. 25, 12-1 p.m.: Mental Health Media Hour (In-Person): This workshop will explore examples of TV and film references to mental health challenges. Join us as we explore some of them and debunk myths and stereotypes about mental health along the way. Registration is required.
Feb 26, 12-1 p.m.: Understanding College Financial Aid Offers (Online): Beth Armstrong with the university’s Office of University Scholarships and Financial Aid, will talk about the terms used in a financial aid offer and what they mean. What is a “Cost of Attendance?” Why is it more than just tuition? What is net price, indirect cost, etc.? This session is not specific to Virginia Tech. Registration is required.
Feb. 27, 1 p.m.: Get to Know Invest529 (Online): Learn about the uses of an Invest529 account, and the tax advantages that come with it. There will be an exclusive offer and a raffle chance for attendees. Registration is required.
Feb. 28, 12-12:45 p.m.: Private Changes, in Private Places – Physician Series with Lewis Gale (Online): This program will cover the natural hormonal changes that occur as we age, including the top issues experienced by men and women. How to initiate this conversation without feeling ashamed or vulnerable with a doctor will also be discussed. Registration is required.
