Early Childhood Education Lunch and Learn Series
Parenting strategies for supporting children's social-emotional and academic well-being
From: Early Childhood Education Initiatives
The Early Childhood Education Initiatives team is partnering with the Child Study Center at Virginia Tech to offer a lunch and learn series workshop series with four sessions starting September 2024 and ending March 2025.
The series focuses on parenting strategies to support children's social-emotional and academic well-being. These strategies are helpful for all families and may be particularly helpful for children and adolescents diagnosed with a disability or mental health disorder such as ADHD, anxiety, or a learning disability.
The third session, titled “How to Talk to Your Children about Mass Traumatic Events They Encounter through Social Media,” will be held Jan. 23, noon – 1 p.m., by Zoom and will be led by Rosanna Breaux, a licensed clinical psychologist, assistant professor in Virginia Tech’s Department of Psychology and director of the Child Study Center at Virginia Tech, and Jasmine Lewis, doctoral candidate in the Cognitive Neuroscience and Biopsychology doctoral program at Virginia Tech. Registration is required to attend.
Along with offering an overview of the impact exposure to traumatic events can have on children, this session will offer strategies parents and caregivers can use to limit their child's social media exposure and talk to them child about mass traumatic events. Resources and indicators that a child may need additional support will also be discussed.
Mark your calendar for the last future session of this series, which will be held March 7. All sessions will be held by Zoom. Additional information about the sessions, including registrations links, will be shared in the Virginia Tech News daily email and on the Caregiving site programs page.
