Hokies Give Back: A spotlight on Roanoke campus
From: Human Resources
During the Hokies Give Back campaign, the university is committed to supporting communities, truly demonstrating our motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
In part of a series of events for the annual charitable campaign, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, the Health Sciences and Technology, and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, hosted a lasagna cookoff.
“Each year we like to hold an event requested from those within our organization, said Senior HR Manager for Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and Health Sciences and Technology and Steering Team representative Brittany Shelton. “In 2022, we held an empanada cookoff, last year was a curry-cook off, and this year was lasagna.”
The lasagna cookoff was held at the FBRI Riverside 2 café where $388 was raised. Thanks to a generous cash match from an FRBI employee who wishes to remain anonymous, the total raised from the event was $716 and donated to New Incentives, a charity suggested by Give Well, an organization that provides donors with a list of recommended charities.
FBRI committee members, Cody Calvert, Cheyenne Muse, Trystin Pfaff, Courtney Powell, and Brittany Shelton, are the creative minds behind their events that navigate logistics; solicit donations; work the events; and help promote, educate on the campaign, and encourage donations.
Upcoming Hokies Give Back events at FBRI include:
- Oct. 28: Oh, my Gourd! Pumpkin Craving and Painting Contest
- Nov. 11: Annual Chili Cook-Off
- Dec. 9-13: “Bid A Basket” Silent Auction
- Dec. 13: Bake Sale and Tacky Sweaters
